Stacey Abrams’ 3 Big Life Lessons: “Be Aggressive About Your Ambition”

Stacey Abrams is on the short list of top all-time role models, and she shares some of her wisdom here, from the campaign trail and beyond. Pull up a chair!

We’re forever in awe of Stacey Abrams, who’s not only the first Black woman in the history of the United States to be nominated by a major party for governor, but who was instrumental in flipping Georgia (and its two Senate seats!) blue in historic elections earlier this year – and continues to crush it from the front lines of voter access with organizations like FairFight (which she founded!). A tax attorney by training, Stacey Abrams served eleven years in the Georgia House of Representatives, seven as Minority Leader, and became the 2018 Democratic nominee for governor of Georgia, where she won, at the time, more votes than any other Democrat in the state’s history.

The advocate, attorney and entrepreneur is also a two-time New York Times bestselling author with a new book out (psst, it’s a legal thriller!). Stacey Abrams has launched multiple organizations devoted to voting rights, training and hiring young people of color, and tackling social issues at the state, national, and international levels. That’s a lot – and we’re skipping over some major parts of her CV!

Frankly, we could spend the rest of the day listing her accomplishments and taking notes – as we should! – but we’re more interested in hearing from Stacey herself about some of the most significant takeaways from the journeys she’s been on. Luckily, we don’t have to look too far! This TedTalk is Stacey Abrams’ template to how she approaches every question and intersection.

No matter what I do, I ask myself three questions:
What do I want?
Why do I want it?
And how do I get it?
