Help Skateistan Raise $100, 000 to Empower Young Girls Through School and Skateboarding

The non-profit's new campaign, 'Give Her Five', aims to give girls in South Africa, Cambodia and Afghanistan safe spaces to skate and learn.

Our friends over at Skateistan have been doing ground-breaking work for a while, using skateboarding to give youth in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa independence and education. Today, they’re launching a new campaign to make them even more effective at what they do: “Give Her Five” is asking all of you to donate $5 in a bid to raise $100, 000 for female empowerment by December 31st.

The campaign is centred around an animation called “Her Story”, portraying an Afghan girl whose life has changed thanks to skateboarding and education. Created by Berlin-based illustrator Maria Giemza and animator Dominik Grejc, it effectively communicates the hybrid of education and skateboarding Skateistan offer girls to empower them in areas where female education is hard to come by. As Skateistan states:

“Skateistan believes girls have an equal right to be safe, play sport, go to school, have confidence and become leaders. 50% of their students are girls. At their Skate Schools in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa, girls are skateboarding and learning together in much-needed safe spaces. Since 2009, skateboarding has proven to be a powerful tool for girls to access education, with Afghanistan being home to the highest percentage of female skateboarders in the world.”

Throughout “Give Her Five”, Skateistan will continue sharing stories about girls who have found their confidence through sport, students who have gained scholarships to schools and women who have travelled overseas to skateboard with the world’s best. As Skateistan’s Executive Director, Oliver Percovich, says, “this is a very important campaign because girls deserve the same chances in life that boys get. The Skateistan community cares a lot about girls’ empowerment and you can support this!”
