Wallice by Taryn Segal

There are lots of reasons to look forward to Fridays, and the fact that it’s the day most new music gets released is definitely way up there on the list. But the amount of new music can feel overwhelming at times, right? Well, we think so – and that’s why we’ve given life to a playlist with handpicked musical goodies for you to fall in love with. We’re calling it the ‘Best New Music Playlist’ and the name says it all.

So without further ado, here are a bunch of new tracks that we’re digging at the moment with 5 incredible highlights. Listen to the full playlist below.

Noname – “Rainforest”

Chicaco-rapper Noname marks the end of February with her first release of 2021 and she’s killing it. “Rainforest” is released alongside the news that her long-awaited follow-up album to 2018’s Room 25 will drop this year. The soundscape of “rainforest” might feel light and chilled, while the lyrics aren’t. Listen close as Noname raps about racism and classism:

“How you make excuses for billionaires, you broke on the bus,” she rhetorically asks on the hook. Noname’s new album will be entitled Factory Baby and a release date is yet to be announced. While you wait on more great music to come, go check out Noname’s Book Club community, initiated to elevate POC voices through monthly recommendations of books written by authors of color.

Chloe X Halle – “80/20”

The always amazing sisters Bailey aka Chloe x Halle have revisited their 2020 breakthrough album Ungodly Hour and released an updated version called Ungodly Hour (Chrome Edition). The album, which is out now, features two brand new tracks, “Hazy” and “80/20”, which are both worth your precious time. “80/20” sees the sisters operating in a rather dark soundscape with their characteristic vocal harmonies and beautiful voices doing their magic.

Jazmine Flowers – “awkward”

“awkward” by the 20-year-old Brixton native Jazmine Flowers is the perfect debut track. “it’s straight up about me being awkward,” the artist writes on her instagram, while the lyrics are of the kind that all of us can relate to. “Try to shake my hand but I go in for a hug,” she sings on this alternative R&B-song that has already left us hungry for more Jazmine Flowers to drop in the future.

Payday – “Big Boy”

We wish we were just half as cool as Payday is when we were 17. The California based rapper, songwriter, producer and whatever-she-wants-to-be is gearing up for the release of her upcoming project P.U.K.E. Tapes Vol 3, due March 26th. Following recent singles “Dolphin” and “Bitter”, “Big Boy” oozes with attitude and good ol’ swag and scores high on everything from beat to lyrics and the way she oh so cool delivers it. Her instagram handle @everyonelovespayday is so true on more levels…

Wallice – “23”

LA singer and songwriter Wallice has dropped her second single “23” in which she humorously reflects on the big life choices, we’re all facing at some points in our existence. Mourning for her youth at one point: “tell me what is wrong with me // I miss my Ohio fake ID” to fantasizing of the grown-up lifestyle that waits around the corner: “Maybe I’ll get married soon, and buy a house with three bedrooms”, “23” is a perfect coming-of-age anthem that you can probably relate to, if not now then later. Just wait…

Also added to this week’s playlist are:

Smerz – “Flashing”
Claire Rosinkranz – “Real Life”
LOVA – “Older Overnight – Bonus Track”
