Hey there! You’ve heard of #DryJanuary, right? Well, we’re switching it up and celebrating #TryJanuary – a month to dig deeper into some of the amazing creations that girls and women are putting into the world! Each week we’ll feature a different universe for you to explore, and today’s is podcasts. Try getting into these (highly binge-able!) shows that are written, produced, starring and/or about by women – you’ll be happy you did!

Who else has fallen in love, either again or for the first time, with podcasts during quarantine? Something about having familiar voices around as we go about our days – doing the dishes, folding the laundry, attempting the at-home workouts we saw on Instagram – has brought a sense of calm to an otherwise pretty out of control year. There are currently over 850,000 podcasts out there, and around 30 million (yes, we said million!) episodes, so unless you know exactly what you’re looking for, it might be tricky to know where to start. Luckily for y’all, we’re here to kick off your listening with five pods that are by, featuring, about and or for women! There’s something for everyone in our list below, and we know you’ll find your newest fave.

Where Should We Begin with Esther Perel (Relationships/Therapy)

If you’re familiar with Esther Perel and her work, you didn’t need to read past the headline to add her podcast Where Should We Begin to your queue – if it wasn’t there already, that is. Esther is a world-renowned psychotherapist who, through three seasons of her pod, helps couples in crisis to identify, work through and heal from the issues that brought them to her in the first place. There’s so, so much to learn from listening into these sessions – whether you’re in a relationship or not!

My Favorite Murder (True Crime/Comedy)

True crime fans all around the world will back us up on this recommendation: My Favorite Murder is just about the best there is. BFF’s Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff mix their signature styles of comedy into retellings of some of the scariest, most traumatic experiences that folks could ever have – which ends up being a great way to have serious, yet somehow upbeat, conversations about mental health, abuse, and staying safe. It’s a not-to-miss!

Hysteria (Politics/Pop Culture)

Welcome to the femxle corner of the Crooked Media universe! From the team behind top Apple podcasts Pod Save America, Hysteria merges the same quick-witted punditry that you know and love from the group of former Obama staffers, with trending topics and cultural conversations about issues that affect women! It’s a laugh that will keep you up-to-date on what’s happening, and smiling through it all.

Encylcopedia Womannica (History/Biographies)

An amazing way to fill in the (female) gaps in our history books! Each episode is around 5 minutes long, and focuses in on an amazing women who you might not know – but definitely should! Each episode of Encyclopedia Womannica features women from all fields and walks of life; storytellers, activists, artists, musicians, STEM chicks, politicians, leading ladies and more! You already know we’re all about role models here at Girls Are Awesome, and this pod is FULL of them!

Call Your Girlfriend (Friendships/Pop Culture)

This is one of those enduring pods that continues to go strong and grow, even after six years, because co-hosts (and real-life besties) Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman have tapped into something magical. Call Your Girlfriend is a wonderful mix of heartwarming rapport between friends, current events and national conversations with an intersectional feminist focus, and the deep love between girl friends – proving that you don’t have to be close-by to be close.
