PREMIERE: O/RIOH’s Video for “about sex, baby” is a Futuristic ‘Fuck You’ to Beauty Standards

The Danish queer producer's latest imagines a lubricated, lusty world of sexual pleasure no matter your gender or body shape.

By 2020, we’ll be pairing sex toys with virtual reality to fully immerse ourselves into porn. By 2025, we’ll be able to buy 3D-printed body parts of our lovers. And by 2028, over a quarter of young people will have had long distance sex via VR. These are just some examples demonstrating the utopian ways technology is changing our sex lives – or dystopian, it’s up to you – and it’s a theme queer producer O/RIOH embraces in her new video for “about sex, baby”.

Created by artist Alice Topsøe-Jensen, the video is a whirlwind of a pastel-coloured, weightless world populated by lustfully rendered people (they almost look lubricated.) These 3D characters are near-robotic and almost genderless beings, whose stereotypically womanly curves or masculine muscles mesh together into one sensual form underneath bald heads and generic faces. Throughout the video, these people proudly flaunt their sexual organs, explore their sexual desires together and sort of march in unrestricted and determined unison showing off whatever bodies they have. Although the meticulously rendered world in the video is seductive enough alone, the song raises the erotica up a notch: with deep electro production, auto-tuned vocals and clear breathy lyrics about being human and ‘rubber gloves and birth control’, it’s a track that’s cooly removed – like an android – as well as full of desire, like something you’d hear at the club right before taking someone home.

Combining the fleshy atmosphere of the video and the pulsating production of the track, “about sex, baby” evokes sex of the future—but from a decidedly positive perspective. The subtext is that sexual pleasure isn’t restricted to people with perfect bodies, or people who conform to gender binaries. Sex is for anyone to explore, no matter how they identify—especially as we (hopefully) continue to sexually liberate ourselves thanks to technology.

O/RIOH is Rikke Østergaard. ‘about sex, baby’ is released by the danish indie label CECH RECORDS.
