Your new favorite song or lifelong musical crush is always right around the corner, and it’s our job to keep bringing you amazing new tunes and artists with that very goal in mind. That’s why we got in touch with the one and only Jazmine Flowers!

We were pretty blown away when we heard 20-year-old Jazmine Flowers’ debut single “Awkward”. There was something tragically relatable about lines like: “Tell me something new but I already forgot // Plus I’m really awkward and I keep fuckin’ up // try to shake my hand but I go in for a hug” and something equally honest and empowering about the line: “But I don’t chat sh*t about sh*t I don’t know sh*t about.” Jazmine Flowers knows who she is and we’re here for it!

Following up on “Awkward”, another smooth offering “this isn’t happiness” landed in early June and it presented a slightly darker sound. We’re sensing more heartfelt tunes to come out from the Brixton born artist. And while we wait for that gift to arrive, we’ve reached out to her with 16 sentences that she’s been so kind to finish for us.

Get to know her better in the interview below and get amazed by the deeply personal visuals for “this isn’t happiness” here:

Hi, I’m Jazmine Flowers and I’ve been making music since… I was about 14. I would write awful songs on piano and attempt to produce them on GarageBand.

I started making music because… I had knee surgery after a dance injury which left me unable to walk for about a month.. I couldn’t sit at a piano either so I’d lay in bed with my guitar on my chest and write songs.

If I were to describe my music, I’d say it sounds kind of like… the R&B lounge of some dystopian club in 3045.. chill but with some futuristic sounds.

I feel the most inspired when… I have a session that didn’t go so well, I get so gassed to go home and make something that actually excites me!

I’m really proud of… the visual for ‘this isn’t happiness’. It looks like how my brain felt when I wrote the song.

If I met my 14-year-old self I’d tell her… keep wearing the same weird-ass clothes and haircut, but jheeez walk around with some confidence dude.

The first time I heard “three little birds” by Bob Marley and The Wailers, I… was 6 and had it on to fall asleep to and had a nightmare. “dont worry.. about a thing”….. mmmhmm apart from the werewolf trying to kidnap me in my sleep.

I’ll never forget when… I ended up backstage at NASS festival and got to watch Tom Misch’s set from the wings as the sun set.. MAGICAL

When I hear the word “flaccid” it makes me… wish I was born without ears and that, if anything, deaf people are in some ways at an advantage.

I feel the most empowered when… I just got my haircut.

My latest release is… “this isn’t happiness” and it’s… like I tore out a piece of my brain and somehow turned it into some sounds.

When people listen to my music, I hope they… feel uncomfortable but in the best way possible. I hope it gives them the desire to ask questions and explore.

It’s important to empower women because… we have so much knowledge and talent to offer the world. We deserve the representation.

My biggest role models are… Michael Jackson and, more recently, Kehlani.

Looking back at this time of my life 10 years from now, I’ll remember it being… incredibly testing of my patience but fun and SO worth the wait.

If I met my 14-year-old self I’d tell her… keep wearing the same weird-ass clothes and haircut but jheeez walk around with some confidence dude.

I want you to know that… my first ever headline show is on 7th October [in London], come vibe.. we can hang out and sing some tunes 🙂
