We called up the one and only Melanie C to take the temperature on girl power and female empowerment.

Melanie C by Conor Clinch

Few people can say that they kickstarted the celebration of “girl power”, but Melanie C, who broke records as Sporty Spice in the legendary Spice Girls, is definitely one of them.

Since she made girls all around the world sing and dance along to bangers like “Wannabe”, “Say You’ll Be There”, “Spice Up Your Life” and “Who Do You Think You Are”, Melanie C has continued to use music as a way to channel her emotions and inspire other people to respect themselves and others.

The latest offering from the British icon was released in the fall of 2020 and came in the shape of her eighth studio album, the self-titled Melanie C. Serving as a collection of self-affirming pop anthems inspired by Mel C’s close collaboration with the LGBTQ+ collective Sink the Pink, the 10 tracks on the record are written to empower you and your dearests, as well as Mel C herself. It’s a celebration of life and individuality and a big middle finger to everyone trying to weigh you down.

We caught up with Mel C to talk about everything from the biggest role models in her life and the evolution of “girl power” to the powerful youth and her praise of inspiring new artists like MØ, Charli XCX and Billie Eilish.

Sit back and get some life lessons from one of our biggest role models, Melanie C.
