Galentine’s Day: Because Sometimes Your Best Friends Are Actually “The One”

February 13th is the day to celebrate and honor the folks in your life who are always there for you!

Happy Galentine’s Day, all you beautiful humans! It’s that wonderful day of the year where we put romance to the side for a minute, and center and celebrate the most meaningful friendships in our lives. You’ve probably heard of it if you, like us, have seen every episode of Parks and Rec at least a dozen times…

As usual, Leslie Knope is exactly right! And Amy Poehler, who plays her, is actually the one behind launching the now-internationally recognized holiday (fun little fact!). There are plenty of holidays throughout the year where we can celebrate the people in our lives that we love (Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day, Valentine’s Day, birthdays, etc.) but until now, there really hasn’t been a holiday devoted to what one could argue are just as much the loves of our lives as significant others: our closest friends.

There are lots of ways to observe Galentine’s Day, and we’re raising our mimosas for however y’all want to do it – whether that’s “Ladies celebrating ladies” by “leaving boyfriends and husbands at home and kicking it breakfast-style” as Leslie Knope does, or getting on a Zoom with your inner (gender non-specific) circle to have a virtual PJ party, it’s all aces in our book!

Many of the relationships we know will always endure no matter what are actually with our closest friends. And frankly, for many of us, the longest relationships we’ve ever had!

We just know that the second week of February tends to contain some pretty romantic love-heavy language and themes, as though being linked up is about as good as it gets; and while there’s nothing wrong at all with celebrating that type of love, Galentine’s Day is our way of honoring the people in our lives who’ve been our ride or dies – and have perhaps supported us through a bunch of Valentine’s Days over the years, spent with different people we were seeing, or alone.

One final, parting word: The question of whether we believe in the “The One” tends to come up around Valentine’s Day every year as well; whether there’s a perfect soulmate for each of us out there. Smart folks can debate that among themselves, but for us, it’s pretty clear that many of the relationships we know will always endure no matter what are actually with our closest friends. And frankly, for many of us, the longest relationships we’ve ever had!

In other words, the “Ones” for us are our besties. And whoever that is for you, we hope you’ll make it a point to let them know how much they mean to you this Galentine’s Day – especially as we approach a year of quarantine craziness, where we’ve all supported and loved on each other in above-and-beyond ways.

So, a very heartfelt Happy Galentine’s Day from us and our crew to you and your Gals, wherever y’all are in the world!
