Hey there! You’ve heard of #DryJanuary, right? Well, we’re switching it up and celebrating #TryJanuary – a month to dig deeper into some of the amazing creations that girls and womxn are putting into the world! Each week we’ll feature a different universe for you to explore, and today’s is television. Try getting into these (highly binge-able!) shows that are written, produced, starring and/or directed by womxn – you’ll be happy you did!

Few things amp us up like a serious femxle protagonist – whether that’s in front of the camera or behind it! – and #TryJanuary is all about putting womxn and their work front and center. We’ve picked five shows that we absolutely can’t get enough of – both newer releases and favorites we find ourselves returning to time and again – and we know you’ll find your next binge below. Besides being super duper enjoyable, we’re loving the added bonus of knowing these are femxle-led productions that center womxn’s experiences and perspectives, often in ways that are still pretty new in mainstream television. What a time to be alive!

So this is your official reminder to set time aside for yourself and enjoy some quality TV by, for, and starring womxn. If you’ve seen these shows before, consider this list your cue to pass the word along next time someone asks for recommendations; and if you haven’t seen one or more of these but have been meaning to, here’s a sign to prioritize it this weekend! Get into our faves below, and click on any of the photo headers to open the show’s trailer!

Dead To Me (Netflix)

We can’t be the only ones who were blown away by not just the storyline of this two-season (the third is coming, yay!) masterpiece, but by the beautiful, viscerally real way it captures the intimacy and intensity of femxle friendships. Frankly, we’d never seen anything like it, and couldn’t take our eyes off the screen. Starring real life badasses Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, and created by Liz Feldman, Dead To Me follows newly-widowed and tightly-wound Jen (Applegate) who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Judy (Cardellini) – a quirky chick with a serious sercret.

The fast pace, the incredible supporting cast and the amazing writing make Dead To Me a can’t miss if you’re into comedy-dramas. Fun bonus fact: Of the eight head writers on the show, fully SIX are womxn – and it shows! It’s impossible to make it through an episode without texting your bestie about how true-to-life Jen and Judy’s friendship is. Trust us!

I May Destroy You (HBO/BBC)

Whewww, cancel your weekend, stock up on snacks, get comfie and prepare to be fully transported to the fast, edgy, in-your-face universe of Michaela Coel, the British actress, screenwriter, director and singer. I May Destroy You is twelve episodes of *perfect* television that Michaela not only wrote (from her own experiences…!) and directed, but stars in as well. The storyline follows main character Arabella (played by Coel), a brilliant but struggling writer, who has to fight to take ownership of her life back after a sexual assault.

Yes, the subject nature can get a bit heavy at times, and due to the real-life nature of the story, Coel’s directing produces incredibly true-to-life flashbacks – which is why we’ll attach a *Trigger Warning* for folkx who might want to do some Googling about the show before digging in. But for us, the honest depiction of everything surrounding these traumatic experiences – including the highs and lows, the unhealthy coping mechanisms, the incredible circle of supportive friends, the rage, and the power of speaking your truth – was not only beautifully captured, but cathartic like nothing we’ve ever seen before. We… have absolutely no notes.

Big Little Lies (HBO, Amazon Prime, HULU)

More perfect television, full stop! Big Little Lies is the story of five central (female!) characters whose lives – and secrets – intersect with deadly consequences. If you’re able to watch only an episode or two without fully binging both incredible seasons, tell us how, because we sure couldn’t! The series is based on a novel of the same title by author Liane Moriaty, who actually put the outline for the storyline together before passing it along to showrunners – aka, her fingerprints are all over it. And the cast features some of the most serious powerhouse actresses in American television and cinema these days, like Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Meryl Freaking Streep, whose performances as the overbearing mother-in-law you’ll want to watch again and again.

A behind-the-scenes note: Reese Witherspoon, who’s one of the producers, is actually the one who optioned the show, wanting to create a set experience that’s more diverse and female-focused. “For 25 years, I’ve been the only woman on set,” she told the Hollywood Reporter. “They call it Smurfette Syndrome, [as in] she’s the only woman around…so I had no one to talk to…. We have to start seeing women how they actually are on film—we need to see real women’s experience—whether that involves domestic violence, sexual assault, romance, infidelity, or divorce.” That’s exactly right!

The Good Fight (HBO/Amazon PrimeVideo/Hulu)

Where to even start with how genuinely kickass The Good Fight is…? You’ve got award-winning Christine Baranski front and center as Diane Lockhart, reprising her role from The Good Wife by starting a new job at an all-Black law firm in Chicago. Baranski has been nominated for Emmy’s a whopping 15 times, and two Tony’s for her incredible work on Broadway. Not only is a woman one of the creators, but the cast is full of assertive, smart-as-a-whip femxle characters who get things done in the courtroom and beyond.

Among them is none other than the *phenomenally* talented Audra MacDonald, who’s not only in the American Theater Hall of Fame, but a Broadway star and an opera singer with multiple Tony and Grammy awards under her belt. So if you live for strong, out-of-this-world talented womxn, this show is everything. And not for nothing, but the fact that this show trolls Donald Trump on the regular delights us profoundly. We can’t wait for the fifth season to start, but the first four should keep you busy for a little while!

Bridgerton (Netflix)

You’ve heard all about it… Everyone is fawning over the cast, the lush sets, the incredible costumes (over 7,500 pieces!), and the general, well, steaminess – We’re here for all of it! The latest offering from television juggernaut Shonda Rhimes is Bridgerton, the period piece set in a fictional London in 1813 and based on Julia Quinn’s novel. The story centers around a young aristocrat named Daphne Bridgerton, who strikes a secret – and mutually beneficial – deal with the handsome, mysterious Duke. She wants to attract more suitors, which having his “attention” will bring, and he wants to avoid marriage entirely, which being “taken” accomplishes – and in true Shonda Rhimes style, there are more than enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat (read: couch) for the entire first season.

The drama is helped along by the show’s unseen narrator, Lady Whistledown, who has to be Gossip Girl’s great-great-great grandmother, and can’t help putting her powdered nose where it doesn’t belong. It’s full of all the elements we love from other Shondaland classics like Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder, plus the visual feast of some of the most beautiful production (and people!) we’ve ever seen. And putting all of that to the side, we love the powerful, diverse mix of femxle characters and personalities, as well as the fact that costume designer Ellen Mirojnick absolutely SLAYED this season. Enjoy!
