2021 is the Year of the Soft Tampon and Ending Period Stigma, and nevernot™ is Here to Make Sure of That!

“We aren’t embarrassed when passing a tissue, are we?” – Our chat with the co-founders of the revolutionary new soft tampon brand nevernot™ about doing periods differently – aka however you want!

Any other menstruators out there who are tired of hiding their period products up a sleeve on the way to the restroom? Or having to coordinate a secret agent-style hand-off with one of your friends when you get your period unexpectedly and don’t have any tampons with you? We’ve all been there, and the votes are in – We’re done with that! It’s 2021, people. Periods aren’t going anywhere, and neither is nevernot™ – the revolutionary soft tampon brand that’s all about giving menstruators the freedom and comfort to do periods their own way – including having sex on your period, without putting your linens on the line!

“Our goal is for folks to have the choice whether they want to be loud – like us as a brand – and tell everyone that they have their period or whether they want to be quiet about it,” says Anna, one of nevernot’s co-founders. “By talking openly about it, we show that nobody should be ashamed or hide.”

So what’s a soft tampon anyway? It’s a string-free, highly absorbent menstrual sponge that offers an unparalleled level of comfort for wearers. Not only do menstruators not feel them once they’re inserted, but there’s no string to mess with – meaning intimate check-ups at the doctor’s office or treatments with your esthetician are no longer going to be accompanied by the pesky little give-away that you’re on your period.

And importantly, the string-free design of nevernot soft tampons was an intentional choice, keeping our trans and non-binary siblings in mind. We know that not all women menstruate, and not all menstruators are women – and that the string on traditional tampons is a week-long reminder that some folks would prefer to be without, because it doesn’t correlate to their gender identity. Out of sight, hopefully a bit more out of mind, so menstruators can focus on what’s most important: Doing what you want, which is actually the nevernot motto!

And while all of this might sound like a new idea, the soft tampon has actually been around for decades – just ask professional athletes and sex workers! Soft tampons have been the period product of choice when performance, comfort and discretion are key. This means that reaching for a soft tampon before hitting the gym, going to the spa, or having sex is a complete game-changer.

Yes, you read that right – you can wear a nevernot soft tampon when you’re having sex! We all know period sex isn’t possible with a regular tampon or a menstrual cup, and in order to cozy up to that special someone (or *someones), we just have to roll that period dice and cross our fingers that it won’t result in having to prematurely retire our sheets or the towel that volunteered as “tribute” – and who among us hasn’t been there? Luckily, those days are over because of soft tampons, which menstruators can wear during all types of intercourse – and we couldn’t be happier to pass that wonderful news along! And, not for nothing, but the fact that periods don’t even need to get brought up in private moments – they’re no longer something to “disclose” before getting frisky – is a breath of fresh air!

We all know stigmas surrounding periods – both having them, and talking about them – are a real thing, and add that extra layer of mental and emotional discomfort onto menstruation, beyond the physical. The idea that periods are something shameful or gross, or that folks who menstruate need to keep it hush-hush when they’re on their period, dates all the way back to… well, basically forever, right? “Half of our society menstruates. Everyone finally has to get used to that. And yet those days are not always the most pleasant days of the month,” says Katha, one of the nevernot co-founders. “So our goal is to make this often unpleasant feeling more comfortable.”

Shaking these stigmas and encouraging menstruators to feel bright and bold is as the heart of the nevernot ethos, all the way down to the packaging – which, with other period products, is a dead giveaway that someone is on their period, and can lead to some awkward situations. “This is so weird to me. We aren’t embarrassed when passing a tissue, are we?” Katha continues. “At nevernot, we want to evoke exactly this self-confidence with our packaging: It looks like candy, in bright colours. It’s not an attempt to hide the period behind a candy façade, but rather to show that period products don’t always have to be clinical, medical and boring. Maybe we can make it easier for our customers to feel like they don’t have to pass their tampons underneath the table.”

“It’s important to say things out loud and to talk about them,” Anna adds. “The world won’t stop spinning if I talk about my period at lunch today.” And she’s right! It’s time to own our comfort, our freedom and our periods – however we decide to do that. Since, after all, the most important thing is for everyone who menstruates to be able to do what they want when they’re on their period!
